Macedonian insulted Erdogan on Facebook and received a fine of 400 euros: If he does not pay, he goes to jail!

A Skopje court sentenced a Macedonian citizen to a fine of 24,600 denars (400 euros) for insulting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on social networks, Turkish agency Anadolia reported.

According to the Macedonian media, E. A, who has Macedonian and Turkish citizenship, was found guilty because he posted statements on social networks through the profile about the President of Turkey.

The court decision stated that the accused "published his ironic statements and sent insults to the leader of a foreign country" in November of 2016.

The trial against the E.A. was initiated after a criminal complaint by the Turkish ambassador to Skopje, Tulin Erkal Kara, at the end of last year.

If he does not pay the fine, E. A. will have to serve the prison sentence.

The media report that according to the Criminal Code of Macedonia, a fine is issued to the person who is "intentionally publicly ridicules and embarrasses a foreign state, its flag, coat of arms, anthem, head of state or diplomatic representative".
