Dragoljub Aleksić (1910-1985), born in the village of Vina near the town of Knjaževac was the most unusual and the biggest Belgrade attraction during the German occupation and after the war.

HE WAS CALLED “THE EXPERIMENT": Nobody believed that a human being could be so strong!

He was an extremely strong man with muscles of steel and an athletic build, a memorable character, and the memory of his feats is still kept in the minds of old Belgrade residents, reports Večernje Novosti news agency.

Blacksmith by vocation, Aleksić was an acrobat, an actor, and a screenplay writer, and he was the topic of the famous London "Times".

Germans were arresting him on the pretext that his movie "Innocence without protection" was building nationalist feelings and upsets the people.

After the Germans were gone, things were not better for him because the liberators accused him of being a collaborationist, because he was buying German movie equipment.

Having proven himself not being guilty, "Innocence without protection" filled those few remaining theaters while the Belgrade residents were full of glee since they wanted some fun after being 4 years under German occupation.

- I was 12 years old then, and lived with my parents on the Terazije square on the 5th floor of the "Belgrade" palace. German UFA movies were shown, and some plays of our actors - said for the news agency Vlastimir Ignjatović, an experienced journalist and the chronicle writer, thus adding:

- You could have seen Aleksić going out of the backseat of the plane, standing on the right wing of the plane and going down on the ladder. He would put a rubber into his mouth and stand  holding onto his teeth to the rail, while he carried the flag of Yugoslavia. People would watch him without blinking, applauding his bravery and concentration. I used to go with my parents and my sister to the square of the Students where Aleksić was performing some of his most dangerous acts.

The most exciting was when someone would bind his hands with the chains and lock it with the padlock. Then, Aleksić would go into a longish rail cage held on a rope on the height of 25 meters above ground.

The rope would start burning and he was supposed to get the chain off his hands before the flames would reach the cage, and he would always manage to do that in the last seconds, which was greeted with thunderous applause.

He displayed great bravery, concentration, and the perfect balance while riding a bicycle on a rail between the houses.

He stopped two planes from taking off with pure strength of his hands.

- I had the chance to meet this urban legend personally. He would often visit the sweet shop "Takovo" on the Terazije square, which was held by my parents Borisav and Stojanka.

Aleksić was a short man, stout, with really strong arms.

His hands would threaten to make minced meat out of the hands of other people.

- Being aware of his great strength, he wanted to be extremely gentle in the situations like that. I still remember him as a charming man, wavy hair, and irresistible smile - remembers Vlastimir, thus adding:

- He had the same destiny like other great people in this country. He died forgotten, aged 75, in a shelter for old people at Bežanija, forgotten from the authorities and the people. He was never publicly acknowledged. But, he remained in hearts and memories of those who had the privilege to see his acrobatics and to watch the sentimental movie about two people being in love.
