During the Bosniak-Croat conflict in Mostar, the bridge was the only link between the eastern Neretva coast, under the auspices of the Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) Army and a smaller part of the city on the right bank that was also under Bosniak control.

A video of the demolition of a bridge has traveled around the world, and the media accused Croatian troops of the Croatian Defense, which the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia did not prove.

According to the media in BiH, it is suspected that it was demolished by the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina and that responsibility was transferred to Croats.

However, no one from Croatian Defense took responsibility for the demolition of the bridge.

The reconstruction of the bridge after the war lasted seven years and cost $ 13.5 million, from the funds of the World Bank, Turkish, Italian, Dutch and Croatian donations.

The old bridge and the city lakes of Mostar were officially listed under UNESCO protection in 2005.

This bridge was the largest arc construction in the world with 4 meters wide and 30 meters long.

The bridge, which would become the symbol of Mostar, was built in 1566 during the time of Suleiman the Magnificent, and the builder was Mimar Hajrudin.
