The construction of new prison began six months in Pancevo according to the most modern standards which will have capacity to accommodate 300 prisoners and 200 detainees.

The works are going as planed, and it was announced that there won't be any break in winter period.

- So far we completed the construction on six of ten objects, and we will finish the remaining four until the end of the year. Currently we are in faze of acquiring the equipment and on finishing and installation works - said Nino Djurdjevic from the construction company "Gradina" from Belgrade.

Objects will be secured on the entrance with bulletproof glass and the latest model of the door, and the entire space is covered with infrared sensors. Few hundreds of surveillance cameras are planned. Furniture for prison rooms will be made by prisoners from Pozarevac, Sremska Mitrovica and Nis.

- This will be the most modern prison with the safety equipment that will be built in, but also with the facilities that will be in it, considering project itself and aesthetics. Considering that this prison is a part custody, Belgrade's Central Prison will have less burden, and Pancevo's district prison will be moved from the center - adds Aleksancar Drobnjak, Head of the project "Modernization of prison facilities."

Serbia was on a right track to fill in all prison cells. In a short time, capacities were increased from 7.200 to 9.800. With the construction of the Penal and Correctional Facility in Pancevo the conditions for accommodation will further adapt to EU standards.

23 million euros worth of investment. Eighteen million was provided by Council of Europe Development Bank (CoEDB), and five from our country. It was predicted that the works will be completed on spring 2018.

Existing District Prison in Pancevo, which is located in the city center in pedestrian zone will be evicted, and the plan is to make this two centuries old building into a museum.
