1st of March is an important date for Slobodan Brankovic. This year, 2017, director of Athletic Federation of Serbia is marking 25 years since he won the title of European Champion on 400 meters on Indoor championship in Genoa.
European Athletic Federation has honored him by appointing him as the man who will give the medal to the champion on 400 meter race on the upcoming continental championship, held in "Kombank Arena", between 3rd to 5th of March.
- I'm very glad and proud that you attended my jubilee. I'm glad to see my friends who were running with me in the relay, and today I am here where I have been for the past nine years. And it is jubilee, exactly nine years I became General-Secretary AFS. This is now another Brankovic, but it is terribly important because we would not be here today if it was not for the one out there, and Athletic Federation of Serbia which takes credit for him- said Brankovic at a cocktail party in the "Belgrade Arena", and thanked the President of the association Veselin Jevrosimovic.
In an interview with Telegraf, director of the association spoke about the feelings during this great jubilee.
- I would lie if i said that everything was not fantastic. I am proud of that fact, and i am even more proud to have an organization behind my back on a much, much higher level that the one in Italy 1992. I believe that everybody will be happy with what AFS managed to do get and organize. I am one of those who participated. It is nice to be here 25 years later with friends i trained and competed with, and with that to have guests from Europe and the world on the cocktail for this jubilee - said Brankovic.
Dragutin Topic spoke about his success.
- I was lucky to have won a medal in the same year on that spot. What Brankovic did is still remembered. To be European Champion is something no one can take away from you. I am glad that he is still General-Secretary of AFS, and for connecting the experience as an athlete and now an official. We are joking that he is a better official than he is an athlete, and he was an European Champion - said the former athlete.
Tamara Malasev, European recorder for high jump for juniors, was present in the event in Arena.
- I jumped on competition like 192 cm in 1984 in Gothenburg, which is a Serbian record. I am extremely happy to be here, i am very happy. This looks phenomenal, and if i wasn't 50 i would have jumped again. I am glad to be here and to see our greats, especially Ivana Spanovic, I know her since she was little, and she broke my record long jump. I hope the stands will be fool and that we will cheer for our people. I came from America to be a part of all of this. Thanks to Brankovic and AFS to have invited me, go for it! - said Malesev.
Finally, the president of the Athletic Federation of Serbia Veselin Jevrosimovic emphasizes how important Brankovic's success is for Serbian athletics.
- Twenty five years of his victory in the European Indoor Championship is really a great deal, and a great incentive for our athletes to continue in the same style now from Friday to Sunday. We did everything for them to give them maximal preparations and best form before European Championship. We have 12 athletes, not one or two. Our national team will not go in full strength, because five of them won't compete because of injuries. I wish them all the luck, i hope they will make us happy - said Jevrosimovic.
