They are geniuses and the pride of Serbia! Our students are officially the best robotics engineers in the world

Among 8.000 participants and 3.000 teams from 16 countries on the World Championship in robotics in Shanghai, held from the 18th and 19th November, the students of "Politehnicka" school for new technologies, won the award for the best presentation of their country and the work in robotics. Although they had the worst assembly kit, Nikola Starcevic, Mihajlo Mihajlovic, and Masan Vucic, with the mentor professor Jovan Miletic, won this prestigious recognition, writes Novosti.

The young students were guests of "Novosti" right upon returning from China and they explained that the rules of the competition state that the assembly kits should be as simple as possible and only our team managed to accomplish it. The rest competed with the most modern robots, which was just additional motivation to our students to show their knowledge and skills.

- We had two hours in the competition itself to program the robot to perform certain tasks. From 7 tasks, three were unknown and their solving carried the largest amount of points, while the rest were known, but no one knows what where the obstacles will be placed from nine locations on the course. The robot had three minutes to complete everything that was given, and the more it does, the more points it will bring to the team - explains Nikola.

The robot built by our high school students had numerous obstacles along the way, Mihajlo said. One of them was a moving bridge, and the task was to turn the propeller so the bridge can be raised and lowered. Then the turning of the windmill, lifting of weights and returning to starting position... Although some of the tasks were known, the contestants didn't know what will "jump" out on the course or, from where the robot will going to start, which made the things more difficult.

The youngest competitor in our team said that those are educational robots, which were partly assembled before the competition. He said that it has wheels and sensors before entering the "ring", and the tools on the robot are added on the competition itself, in accordance with the tasks that are in front of them.

- Shanghai is enormous, it has more than 20 million residents and we had the opportunity to see it from close. The television tower left the greatest impression on us, it is 260 meters tall. You can see the entire Sumadija from Avala tower, and you can see the panorama of the city - said the students.

The young students say that they were friends with the contestants from Emirates, India, and also from Mexico, and they had girls in their team, who left a special impression on our guys. They were surprised that they heard about Serbia, and they exchanged information about the culture of their countries.

First Performance

The trip of our students to Shanghai was financed within the action "Battle for knowledge". This is the first time that Serbia has representatives in this prestigious competition, and the opportunity to participate in the was achieved after the second place on WER open cup of Croatia and the region. The world championship in educational robotics (WER) is being held in China since 2002, and other countries have been participating in it in the past four years. The teams are competing in three age groups - lower grades of elementary schools, higher grades of elementary school, and high school group, in five or six categories.

New address

Politehnika - School of new technologies is on a new address since September 1st. After many decades of working in small rooms, the students are getting even better working conditions.

- This success of our students is an encouragement to continue even better. We are slowly adjusting to the new space, and we are very happy with what we received and finally, the entire collective is in one place - said Dusan Milovanovic, principal of the school.
