The Kingdom of Yugoslavia was attacked on 6 April 1941, the strong gusts of air forces of fascist Germany, according to a statement from the trial of Field Marshal, attack took place only because of Adolf Hitler's vanity.

The decision to destroy Belgrade was made by the Fuhrer himself on March 27, because of the the news that the demonstrators started protesting furious about the signing of the "Tripartite Pact".

This is confirmed by the testimony of German Field Marshal von Kleist from the trial that followed after the war.

- Air attack on Belgrade in 1941 was primarily of political - terrorist character and had nothing to do with the war. This aerial bombing was a matter of Hitler's vanity, his personal revenge - he said on that occasion.

The main objective of the bombing of Nazi power was the destruction of Belgrade, demoralizing the army and the people and the destruction of Yugoslav aviation resources.

The exact number of victims has never been precisely determined. The list of dead in Belgrade, which then had a population of 370,000, was 2.274 civilians, while some estimates say there were around 4.000 casualties.

The city has suffered incalculable damage. 714 buildings were completely destroyed, 1,888 buildings severely damaged and 6,829 partially damaged, including the building of the Old Palace, whose dome was destroyed.

Densely populated neighborhoods were targeted, hospitals, teachers' home, temple, railway station, main post office, Zemun airport. Few hundreds of civilians were killed in the Vaznesenjske church, and more hundreds of citizens were killed when city warehouse was hit in Karadjordje park.

The building of the National Library of Serbia in Kosancic crown was completely destroyed, built in 1832. It was the only national library which was deliberately attacked and destroyed during the Second World War. The entire fund of 350,000 books, including the writings of medieval invaluable disappeared after the bombing in the fire.

Apart from Belgrade, Kraljevo, Nis and other cities were targeted.
